IWA (Individual Working Alone) Recert Course

What is it for:

Any individual wishing to renew their IWA competency, which enables them to establish and maintain a safe system of work for the duration of their time when working “On or Near the Line”.

Who should attend:

Anyone wanting to maintain their IWA competency. This course provides the first assessment in the 2 year competence assessment cycle for an IWA. Only those that already hold a valid IWA competency certificate, have completed a 'cycle' of assessments will be eligible to attend.

This re-certification event can be attended up to 2 months prior to the expiry of the existing certificate and the new certificate will still be valid for 2 years from the actual date of expiry.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of the course, the candidates will be able to interpret correctly the relevant parts of the Rule Book, the Railway Group Standards applicable to working alone on the railway.

They will be able to demonstrate their understanding and ability to set up and maintain a safe system of work while alone “On or Near the Line”.

What does it contain:

To bring certification in line with each other, PTS Recertification is included as part of the IWA Recert Course. This is to prevent one certification expiring before the other. The course content is as follows;

  • Introduction and PTS & IWA Workbooks
  • Review of Workbooks to determine training needs
  • Relevant training on weak areas noted from Workbook and any new rules inc. videos
  • Revision
  • PTS theory assessment
  • IWA theory assessment
  • IWA practical/verbal assessment
  • Feedback and post course objective

How is it taught:

Tutor led sessions, along with group discussions, brainstorming exercises, with desktop scenarios to practice the skills delegates have just learnt.

The theory and practical assessments at the end of the course are to determine satisfactory competence.

Post course objectives are included to explain to the IWA how to proceed with evidence gathering and workplace assessments to ensure continued competence.
