PC (Protection Controller) Initial Course

What is it for:

Any Line Blockage to a line that requires more than one group to work within it must be arranged by a qualified PC. The PC will liaise with the signaller and take the block, then sign on to his form any other COSS wishing to work within the block

Who should attend:

Anyone who already holds a valid COSS certificate and is now required to establish safe and effective systems of protection for more than one group of persons carrying out engineering works. The Sponsor should choose candidates who in their opinion are mature and experienced enough to carry out the role. The COSS must hold the full competency and not the provisional status.

Course Objectives:

On successful completion of the course the delegate will have the knowledge required to carry out the duties of a Protection Controller as set out in the Rule Book and competence requirements of GO/RT 3358 Appendix C.

What does it contain:

The course content is as follows;

  • Introduction.
  • Procedure for blocking the line and arranging protection
  • Starting work, during work and change of PC/COSS/IWA
  • When work is completed or suspended
  • When work is not completed or suspended at the agreed time, resumption of work
  • Theory assessment
  • Practical/verbal assessment
  • Post course training objectives

How is it taught:

Tutor led sessions, along with group discussions, brainstorming exercises, with desktop scenarios to practice the skills delegates have just learnt.

The theory and practical assessments at the end of the course are to determine satisfactory competence.

Post course objectives are included to explain to the new PC how to proceed with evidence gathering, mentoring and workplace assessments to ensure continued competence.
