Points Operator Initial Course What is it for: At times on the railway, points may need to be operated locally/manually due to failure or to ensure safety to both rail workers and associated plant when working within T3 blocks. Who should attend: Anyone over the age of 18 who is required to manually operate power operated points which have failed or have been disconnected. A points Operator works to the instructions of a signaller or Route Setting Agent, according to the complexity of the failure. As a Points Operator is classed as working alone, they must either hold COSS or IWA competency as a pre-requisite. Any COSS with a Red Triangle on their card is prohibited from working alone on the Infrastructure and therefore is not eligible to attend. Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course, the candidates will be able to demonstrate their understanding and ability to operate level crossing barriers correctly in line with Network Rail Rule Book GE/RT8000 series, and the Railway Group Standard GO/RT3262 Auxiliary Operating Duties. How is it taught: Tutor led sessions, along with group discussions, brainstorming exercises, with desktop scenarios to practice the skills delegates have just learnt. The theory and practical assessments at the end of the course are to determine satisfactory competence.
